blueView: Car of the Month - Steve's Alfa Romeo

30 Mar 2005

blueView is an occasional series profiling the CobaltNiche team or topical issues affecting design and manufacturing in Australia and globally. Currently, we are getting a unique insight into each of our team by looking at the cars in their lives. This month we take a peek into our Managing Director's garage...

Steve Martinuzzo's pride and joy is his black Alfa Romeo 147. The Alfa, especially with its gnarly engine-note, purposeful stance and iconistic grille was always an emotive choice, it was a classic dilemma of wanting both form AND function. "I wanted a car that was fun to drive (and park!) and had some soul, but still practical enough to carry 5 people".

The Alfa does a good job of balancing the 'everyday commute' with the 'special-Sunday-drive' experience. And its not bad at fitting-in lots of things (like two bikes and a camping weekend-away worth of backpacks). But it really comes into its own zooming around twisty roads, like on a recent trip down to Lorne along the Great Ocean Road....

In spite of his background and choice in cars , Steve is not totally bewitched by all things Italian, "there are enough things that regularly remind me everyday that this car was built in Italy and not Germany".
