Earlier this year CobaltNiche client Lateral Grifols launched an instrument that literally helps save lives and does it by leapfroging current pathology systems.
Life Blood Analysis
STATx is an automated blood type analysis system used in small to medium sized pathology laboratories. The instrument provides rapid identification of blood types for blood transfusions. It literally helps saves lives.
The core element of the system is a proprietary microfluidics ‘credit-card style’ analysis card, which reacts uniquely to each particular blood group and sub-type. The instrument manages the complete workflow of blood analysis from sample preparation to the presentation of test results.
STATx is revolutionary in its compact size, speed of processing and the fact that it integrates all core components (such as camera, scanner, work tray, touch screen and PC) into a single, ready to use product.

CobaltNiche Development
Through user observation and painstaking design, CobaltNiche developed the instrument's workflow architecture, mechanical and product engineering and the GUI (graphic user interface) design. The unique workflow and user interface is based on trays as a means of organising and keeping samples and results paired. These sample trays are intuitively represented in the GUI by icons.
The result
In partnership with associates Axxin, we incorporated several technologies into the instrument design to improve productivity and reduce operator error, including:
- 10” touch screen display to reduce the need for external components such as a mouse,
- QWERTY keyboard integrated into software platform
- Rotating scanner to allow barcode scanning from multiple directions
- LED’s to indicate power and readiness of scanner and imaging devices
- Intuitive and user friendly GUI which guides operators through the recommended workflow and mimics the physical sample tray arrangement
On a styling and design level, this system bases itself on a professional and elegant design language with signature elements that can be applied to future instruments within the family. The base of unit has been designed to connect additional components and the touch screen has been angled for user comfort and visibility.
