Case Studies

Cave and technical scuba diving are extreme sports with inherently high risks, where any mistake can easily be fatal.

From first-hand experience, the founder of Lockclip identified an opportunity to improve the clips used by divers for ‘safety line’ attachment and connecting equipment to their harnesses.

Currently cheap ‘dog clips’ are used as they are readily available. However, they are easily jammed by salt and grit, are unable to be released when under tension, and are difficult to operate with gloved hands.

Lockclip developed a basic clip configuration to overcome these issues, and then worked in conjunction with CobaltNiche to engineer and develop the end product. The challenge was to address the mechanical and ergonomic requirements given the difficult ‘underwater’ operating environment.
CobaltNiche was responsible for design and engineering of the assembly in conjunction with Lockclip, and the manufacture of a range of pre-production prototypes for field trials.
